THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST ACCORDING
TO THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS
By Forest R. Steenfott

Please follow me on this matter of “the community of believers.”

Author: Paul
Theme: Salvation by Grace
Date of writing: c. A.D. 49 or 52

“THE EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS is addressed to a group of churches in Galatia, which was located in the center of what is now known as Asia Minor. The original inhabitants were Phrygians, with a religion of nature worship. Many Jews lived in these cities. The Galatians were noted for their impetuosity, fickleness, and love for new and curious things. Paul visited Galatia on both his first missionary journey (Acts 13:51; 14:8,20, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe being situated in southern Galatia), and on his third (Acts 18:23), although of his labor in founding these churches there is no record. On his second missionary journey the apostle was forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach there (Acts 16:6).

At the time Paul was writing, the Galatian churches were facing a double threat, involving purity of doctrine and purity of conduct. Certain individuals had come into the area who would "pervert the gospel of Christ" (1:7; 5:10). They insisted that, while salvation was of Christ, works were also necessary for salvation. To this Judaizing, i.e. legalistic error, the Galatians were already beginning to yield (1:6; 3:1), thus returning to a bondage of observing days, months, years, times, etc. (4:10). Paul overwhelmingly destroys all arguments in favor of mixing the law with faith by pointing out that Abraham was justified by faith alone 430 years before the giving of the Mosaic law. The apostle answers the complementary error - that a believer is made spiritually mature by keeping the law - by setting forth the truth of the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, and the richness of life available when He rules the Christian whom He indwells.” end of note

He says first sentence first paragraph that “Galatians is addressed to a group of churches in Galatia.” Look at the first sentence of the second paragraph, “At the time Paul was writing, the Galatian churches were facing a double threat, involving purity of doctrine and purity of conduct.” Now Doctor Scofield makes a very clear concise statement regarding the Holy Spirit in the last sentence of the second paragraph. “The apostle answers the complementary error - that a believer is made spiritually mature by keeping the law - by setting forth the truth of the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, and the richness of life available when He rules the Christian whom He indwells.” It is very clear in my thinking that the epistle to the Galatians is being address to the community of believers.

I truly believe that our heart, body and soul must be on the altar of “living sacrifice…which is your reasonable service.” What is our service for? It is for God and others.

(Rom 12:1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

(Rom 12:2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

(Rom 12:3) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

(Rom 12:4) For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

(Rom 12:5) So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

(Rom 12:6) Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

(Rom 12:7) Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

(Rom 12:8) Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

(Rom 12:9) Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

(Rom 12:10) Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

(Rom 12:11) Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

(Rom 12:12) Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

(Rom 12:13) Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

(Rom 12:14) Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

(Rom 12:15) Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

(Rom 12:16) Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

(Rom 12:17) Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

(Rom 12:18) If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

What is the point that I’m trying to make? This will also be seen in the matter of “the fruit of the Spirit.” Notice verse three, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think:” Notice “to every man that is among you.” It is speaking of individuals in a group setting.

Verse 5 also speaks of individuals within a community: “So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Each one of us makes up the Body of Christ. We are not separate entities in and of ourselves.

Verses 6 through 8 takes up the matter of gifts that God gives to individuals for the common good of the community. What ever gift God gives to each one of us is to be shared with others in the community of believers.

Now verse 10 will bring us back to Galatians 5: 13 through 26, which is “"Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another."

(Gal 5:13) For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

(Gal 5:14) For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

(Gal 5:15) But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

(Gal 5:16) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

(Gal 5:17) For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

(Gal 5:18) But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

(Gal 5:19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

(Gal 5:20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

(Gal 5:21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

(Gal 5:22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

(Gal 5:23) Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

(Gal 5:24) And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

(Gal 5:25) If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

(Gal 5:26) Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

The whole context of this section 13 through 26 is being addressed to the community of believers. It speaks very firmly to their inter actions with each other within the Body of Christ. Verse 13 speaks to the “brethren…called unto liberty…use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” This is being addressed to the community of believers.

(Gal 5:15) But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another gives the hurt we can cause each other, “But if you bite and devour one another, take heed that you be not consumed one of another.” So far this is addressing the entire group. I have witnessed over the years that local churches develop personalities of their own, some good (of the Spirit), and some bad (of the flesh).

So the local church or assembly or community of believers should be very careful to follow:

(Gal 5:16) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

(Gal 5:17) For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Paul makes up a list of the works of the flesh:

(Gal 5:19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery,fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

I have seen a few of these in the church, and it effects the whole body. These that I have seen are adultery, fornication, idolatry, hatred, wrath, strife, heresies, and envyings. “Wait,” you say, “these are individual sins.” No they are not. You can not have adultery all by yourself. In fact each of these can involve two, three or more people. Some of these works of the flesh have split and divided churches over the years. I have witness church break ups just in my own lifetime. I have seen churches fold up and die away. I am wounded when I see this. Can you imagine how the Holy Spirit feels?

Let us turn to the bright side of the community of believers. There is another list that Paul gives that is just after the “works of the flesh.”

(Gal 5:22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
(Gal 5:23) Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Once again as the church of our blessed Lord and Savior “we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” This is a good admonition for us believers living together. I believe that Galatians 6: 1 and 2 sum up what has gone before.

“(Gal 6:1) Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
(Gal 6:2) Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

INTRODUCTION TO THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS:

(Eph 1:1) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

(Eph 1:2) Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

(Eph 1:3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

(Eph 1:4) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

SAINTS, OUR, US, WE – THE COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS:

There is a point I want to make as we launch into this study of the Holy Spirit’s work in the church is that once again it is talking to the community of believers. I do not want to minimize the responsibility of individuals in the church. The church collectively could not save my soul from hell and the wrath of God. Jesus Christ died for me personally. I had to except Him as my personal savior and Lord. God positions me into the Body of Christ along with other believers. God not only made us responsible to Him, but also to other believers.

THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS, written in Rome, the first in order of the prison epistles (Acts 20 - 27; see Acts 28:30, note), was carried by Tychicus, concurrently with Colossians and Philemon. Probably the two larger letters had their occasion in the return of Onesimus to Philemon. Ephesians is the most impersonal of Paul's letters. Indeed the words "in Ephesus" are not in the best manuscripts. Colossians 4:16 mentions an epistle to the Laodiceans. It has been conjectured that the letter known as Ephesians is really the Laodicean letter. Possibly it was sent to Ephesus and Laodicea without being addressed to any specific church. The letter would then be "to the saints and the faithful in Christ Jesus" anywhere.

The doctrine of the Epistle confirms this view. It contains the highest Church truth, but has nothing about church order. The Church here is the true Church, "His body," not the local church, as in Philippians, Corinthians, etc. Essentially, three lines of truth make up this Epistle: (1) the Christian's exalted position through grace; (2) the truth concerning the body of Christ; and (3) a life lived in accordance with that position.

There is a close spiritual affinity between Ephesians and Joshua, the "heavenly realms" answering in Christian position to Canaan in Israel's experience. In both there is conflict, often failure, but also victory, rest, and possession (Josh 21:43 - 45; Eph 1:3; 3:14 - 19; 6:16). As befits a complete revelation, the number seven is conspicuous in the structure of Ephesians.

I wish to start off our study with the Hymn of Praise and Glory to God the Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1: 3 – 14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heavena, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Forest R. Steenfott, This is My Testimony and Witness: ©(I) THE FACTS CONCERNING THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, THE COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS.

1. Ephesians 1: 13 – 17: Becoming God’s property”

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation---having also believe, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you, and your love for all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.”

Eternal Security—you were sealed in Him (Jesus Christ) with the Holy Spirit.

The seal of the Holy Spirit shouts and declares to the matter of eternal security of the believer. Those who do not believe in “Eternal Security”believes that it gives a license to continue in sin. Scripturally that is so far from the truth. Apostle Paul comes down hard on that In Romans 6th chapter. Verse one starts out, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid!”

Some will bring up Christ use of a metaphor in John 15th chapter of vine and branches. Let us look at the text 1 through 6, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, You are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

The person this is speaking to has salvation, “You are already clean because of the Word.” Being that we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit at our second birth we will bear fruit of the Holy Spirit. This passage has nothing to do with loosing your salvation.

Let us go back to the matter of “works.” Really “Eternal Security” is an issue over our view of “works” of the Believer. It goes back to “election.” Election is found in Ephesians 1:3 – 7, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath bless us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved; in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

I believe that my calling and election is sure. God said it and I believe it. I now want to give you my testimony in a few simple words with Scripture.

(1Co 15:3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
(1Co 15:4) And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

I know that the Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again for Forest Steenfott.

This next verse is what I did about it:

(2Ti 1:12) For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord in 1947. This next Scripture is a burning desire within my very being for 51 years. This is

(Php 3:10) That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

2. Ephesians 2: 17 – 22: Creation of an organism.

And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

We need to face again

(Eph 2:17) And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

(Eph 2:18) For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

(Eph 2:19) Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

(Eph 2:20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

(Eph 2:21) In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

(Eph 2:22) In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

”There are several items that come out in this passage about the matter of our salvation.

Election: of a sinner to be a saint.

There is one thing about God’s election is that it is by the grace of God, “For by grace you are saved” (Ephesians 2: 8). If it wasn’t for the grace of God none of us would be saved In love, “He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1: 5 – 6).

The whole matter of “election” is demonstrated very clearly in Acts 13: 46 – 48,“And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first (the Jew); since you repudiate it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. For thus the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU SHOULD BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.'" And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.” “appointed to eternal life believe” is a very vital and important statement. Without God’s “choosing or election” there would be no “believing.”

I now want to take up the issue of “believing.” It has to be partially intellectual belief. You have to have some knowledge in what to believe. An intellectual belief alone will not save anyone. James addresses this issue in his epistle, “(Jas 2:14) What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not have any works? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it?

(Jas 2:15) Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food

(Jas 2:16) and one of you tells them, "Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily."If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do?

(Jas 2:17) In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not have any works, is dead.

(Jas 2:18) But someone may say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without any works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

(Jas 2:19) You believe that there is one God. That's fine! Even the demons believe that and tremble with fear.

(Jas 2:20) Do you want proof, you foolish person, that faith without works is worthless?

(Jas 2:21) Our ancestor Abraham was justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar, wasn't he?

(Jas 2:22) You see that his faith was active with his works, and by his works faith was made complete.

(Jas 2:23) And so the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." And so he was called God's friend.

(Jas 2:24) You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

(Jas 2:25) Likewise, Rahab the prostitute was justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them away on a different road, wasn't she?

(Jas 2:26) For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.

“Salvation is in three parts;

(1) Justification, the removal of the guilt and penalty of sin and bestowal of a positive righteousness, Jesus Christ is given at the moment the sinner puts his faith in the Lord Jesus as Saviour; (The Christian <has been> saved from the guilt and penalty of sin, Luke 7:50; 1 Cor. 1:18; 2 Cor. 2:15; Eph. 2:5,8; 2 Tim. 1:9, and is safe);

(2) Sanctification, a progressive work of the Spirit in the life of the believer, is a present possession in which He eliminates sin from the experience of the believer and produces His own fruit; (The Christian <is being> saved from the habit and dominion of sin; Rom. 6:14; 8:2; 2 Cor. 3:18; Gal. 2:19, 20; Phil.1:19; 2:12, 13; 2 Thess. 2:13);

(3) Glorification, the act of God transforming the present bodies of believers into perfect, sinless, deathless bodies. (The Christian <will be> saved at the lord’s return, from all the bodily infirmities that are the result of sin and God’s curse upon the sinful world; Rom. 8:18-23; 1 Cor. 15:42-44, and brought into entire conformity to Christ, Rom. 13:11; Heb. 10:36; 1 Pet. 1:5; 1 John 3:2). The believer has the first two now. The Holy Spirit, indwelling the believer, is God’s earnest money, guarantee to him future glorification of his body. The Holy Spirit is this guarantee until ‘the redemption of the purchased possession.’”

3. Ephesians 3: 13 – 19: Empowering the organism.

“Therefore I ask you not to lose heart at my tribulations on your behalf, for they are your glory. For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all fullness of God.”

I see a great lack in praying in the church, today. There was an instance in Acts where the Church went to real earnest prayer. It came about from the problem of persecution.

Acts 4: 23 – 31 The Warfare of the Spirit-filled Church:

And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

(1) Two Factures are involved in starting our prayers—one of single interest and addressing God the Creator:

And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, who made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is;

(2) The Use of Scripture in Praying:

Who, by the mouth of thy servant, David, hast said, “Why did the nations rage, and the peoples imagine vain things?”

(3)Declaring this Prophecy Fulfilled with the Sovereignty of God:

The kings of earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child, Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the nations, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, to do whatever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

(4) The Prayer Request:

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings; and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

(5) They Prayed Their Request in Jesus Name:

By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child, Jesus.

(6) God Truly Answered the Church’s Prayer Request:

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Praise the Lord, Amen

A PRAYER: Doxology: Ephesians 3: 20 – 21: “NOW TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO DO EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY BEYOND ALL THAT WE ASK OR THINK, ACCORDING TO THE POWER THAT WORKS WITHIN US, TO HIM BE THE GLORYIN THE CHURCH AND IN CHRIST JESUS TO ALL GENERATIONS FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN.”

(II) THE EXHORTATIONS CONCERNING THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK WITH THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, THE COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS.

1. Ephesians 4: 1 – 6: To exercise the fruit of the Spirit in keeping the unity in the body.

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unit of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”

Walk in a manner worthy of the calling:

Today, we seem ready and willing to put on the gloves, and start attacking away. Most of these fights are on the personality basis. This issue of our struggles with each other comes into play just a few more verses down in this very chapter.

“We come now to Ephesians chapter four to an important dividing point in this letter. The first three chapters contained doctrine or facts showing our position or standing in Christ Jesus. The last three chapters 4, 5, 6 give us exhortations. This is the proper order, for only in doctrine can one see the sweet reasonableness of the exhortations, and obtain the necessary power and technique to obey them. In brief, God says in chapters 1 – 3, “I have made you a saint.” In chapters 4 – 6, He says, “Now, live a saintly life.”

Paul thought of himself as a prisoner or slave of Jesus Christ. He had a singleness of mind to obey the Lord in preaching His Word, the gospel. Now Paul could have used his apostolic authority and commanded us to obey. He didn’t, instead, he pleads, “entreat” is for an English word “please.” “Therefore” reaches back to all the blessing and exalted positions in salvation which the saints enjoy, chapters 1 – 3, and reaches ahead to the obligations which such privileges put upon the saints.

“Walk – to walk about,” thus “to conduct one’s self, to order one’s behavior.”

“Worthy” speaks to the Christian experience, the Christian life they live, should weight as much as the profession of Christianity which they make.

“Calling” the divine summons into salvation which God gives a sinner, in which he is constituted willing to accept the salvation offered.

Paul’s thought is that sinners were called into Salvation and made saints. They are to be obedient to that heavenly calling or summons to be saints, and live saintly lives.”

What becomes very evident in these verses is the fruit of the Holy Spirit; “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unit of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” If this would only be true for the visible, local, evangelical, fundamental churches in America, today.

We have become so self-centered in our own way of life. Our careers, making money so we can keep up with the Jones. The family and its entertainment come first. Where is the sacrifice and giving to Christ and His church. Looking to the needs of others especially in the church. Most of us come to church with masks on with our best bib and tucker. Do we really make close friends. We can find the deep seeded problems in deep friendships, where we can share, pray and help each other. When we look on the surface of things we become critical and judgmental. Then apostle Paul concludes, “But if ye bite and devour one another,take heed that ye be not consumed one of another” (Galatians 5:15). So churches split and some die.

Do we have to work at our marriage? You better if you want a long happy one, the same way in the church. Apostle Paul speaks of this issue in Philippians 2:12–16, “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing; that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life.” Husbands and wives don’t make a good marriage if they are grumbling or disputing with each other. I stress this very point “that being diligent to preserve the unit of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4: 3).

2. Ephesians 4: 25 – 32: To not have evil actions that are repugnant to the holiness of the Holy Spirit.

“Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth, each one of you, with his neighbor, for we are member of one another. Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. Let him who steals steal no longer; but rather let him labor, performing with his own hands what is good, in order that he may have something to share with him who has need. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

God is not only the great Creator, but a Person with Feelings. He is not only holy and just, but is loving, kind and full of compassion. Let us turn to Psalm 103:

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:

3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,

4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The LORD executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed.

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

13 As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him.

17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those

who fear Him,

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

3.Ephesians 5: 15 – 18: To comment to the absolute control of the Holy Spirit.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;"

Be filled with the Spirit,” the word filled is the same word for controlled. We talk much about the Lordship of Jesus, but also there is an issue where there is the Lordship of the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 5:18. It is also a command, “understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Our problem is that we are raised and live in a democratic society. We have the Bill of Rights. We have no idea of a monarch rule. Yet under God’s rule we will live a much happier and peaceful live.

We must read and make effective in our life Romans chapter six. Please carefully read this chapter

1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3† Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freeda from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instrumentsb of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine whichc was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This control by the Holy Spirit affects three areas of our life, which is involving Romans six.

1. Our Church and Worship—Ephesians 5: 15 through 21

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

2. Our Family, husband, wife and children—Ephesians 5: 22 through 6: 4

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

3. Our work and job—Ephesians 6: 5 through 9

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

4. Ephesians 6: 13 – 18: To engage in the spiritual warfare along with the Holy Spirit.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospelof peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Lastly we must remember that we are in a battle, but not alone. The Holy Spirit is in us, Christ is with us. Two things will bring us through the battle, “and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit.”

God’s Everlasting Love

Romans 8: 26 through 39

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Benediction: Ephesians 6: 23 – 24 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.
